For the first time in over a decade, the Air Jordan 4 Retro Thunder returns and will be featured as part of Jordan Brand’s Spring/Summer 2023 campaign.
Jordan Brand brought back this fan-favorite colorway, featuring a premium black nubuck upper with Tour Yellow splashes across the midsole, eyelets, and tongue. Michael Jordan’s iconic Jumpman logo is placed on the heel tab, tongue, and insoles of the sneakers.
The Air Jordan 4 Retro Thunder reps 2023 was released on May 13, 2023.
Inspired by the electrifying colors of Michael Jordan’s motorcycle racing team in 2006, the return of the Air Jordan 4 “Thunder” has sparked much discussion. Having been privy to the retro style’s reinstallation since last fall, initial images were met with mixed reviews, as the forefoot stitching showcased a varying array of bright yellow. After the latter was updated to align with the pair’s original DNA from the mid-2000s, official images of the thunderous silhouette are finally available.
Designed 17 years later, Tinker Hatfield’s second Air Jordan design adheres almost exactly to the specifications of its 2006 counterpart, lining much of the upper with jet-black nubuck and featuring further pitch-dark color combinations along the midfoot mesh, laces, and brand labels. “Thunder” is illuminated in its signature placements, illuminating the base layer, laces, and midsole underfoot, while fresh white accents are applied to the various Jumpman insignias.
Last fall, it was announced that the Air Jordan 4 “Thunder” would return for 2023. And while the initial excitement following the announcement was high, the subsequent appearance of handheld images left many in shock, as the upcoming retro was rumored to differ significantly from the original in one particular area: the stitching. Thankfully, the Jumpman recognized the error of his ways and quickly altered the thread to bring the release closer to the OG specification.
The 2023 Air Jordan 4 “Thunder,” seen in retailer images, leans much closer to its 2006 counterpart after the changes. Much of the upper is made from black nubuck leather, matching the adjacent mesh, laces, support wings, and the like. The titular “Thunder” then appears in the usual places, highlighting the mesh bottom, midsole, and many of the adjacent accents.
