The Air Jordan 4 Retro Toro Bravo has four dominant colors that define its look: cement gray, burnt red, white, and black.
The upper of the Toro Bravo Air Jordan 4 is made of fiery red nubuck. Black accents, along with cement gray on the outsole, tongue label, and eyelets, complete the design of these sneakers. The shoe’s white midsole also contains some Visible Air units. This white midsole rests on a gray sole, completing the design.
The combination of black and red has always been a significant milestone in Air Jordan history for obvious reasons. The red aspect of this equation has been more controversial in the past, causing Nike to rage, especially during the Air Jordan 1 era with its fiery, rule-breaking color palette. And while it’s no secret that Nike greatly benefited from this minor controversy, they have actually significantly reduced the red sections on successive releases. So, while models like the Air Jordan IV sported the “Fire Red” colorway upon its initial release, the color was used more sparingly, used only for the sneaker’s tiny yet impactful accents. Retro Air Jordan treatments have changed the role of red in the lineup, allowing for all sorts of bold colorways that would likely have given the person in charge of NBA uniform guidelines a panic attack if they had stepped onto the court during Mike’s heyday.
Among the most popular Air Jordan retros with red uppers was the Air Jordan V pair from the 2009 “Raging Bull/Toro Bravo” pack. Keep in mind that the “Raging Bull” nickname was a community-chosen nickname that Jordan Brand eventually gave them, “Toro Bravo,” shortly before their release. The Air Jordan V “Toro” was somewhat of a sleeper hit upon its initial retail release, but has only gained notoriety since then. Its current status in the collectible world is perhaps best exemplified by winning the title of “Best Non-OG Air Jordan” at our March Madness Sneaker Tournament in 2012. Later that year, Carmelo Anthony appeared sporting a “Toro”-style Air Jordan IV, with those Player Exclusives eventually evolving into this Air Jordan IV “Toro.” Witness the Air Jordan IV “Toro” receiving its due dignity in an environment that connects it to the faux wooden crate packaging of the aforementioned Air Jordan V.
