Originally released in 2006, the Air Jordan 4 Retro Lightning (2021) is one of the most recognizable retro Jordan 4 colorways in the Jordan Brand catalog. It features a Tour Yellow Durabuck upper with black mesh inserts and dark gray eyelets. A black Jordan Flight logo patch with white and yellow accents on the tongue complements the upper. A Jumpman logo on the heel tab and a white midsole with a visible Air unit complete the design.
The Air Jordan 4 Retro Lightning (2021) was released in August 2021.
What was once the absolute pinnacle of “Grail” status shoes will soon become an affordable GR. On August 7, the famous Air Jordan 4 “Lightning” will be released for the first time since its original online exclusive on August 23, 2006. Nearly on the fifteenth anniversary of this epic release, the Jordan 4 “Lightning” also arrives. Comes with a special shoebox featuring a lightning-yellow lid to match the speckled gray on black.
The Air Jordan 4 Lightning Reps launched at a unique time for Jordan Brand, as the company (along with the rest of the industry) pivoted to digital commerce. It also marked the return of the Air Jordan 4 Retro, the first of its release since the famous “Nike Air” drops of 1999, as well as the acclaimed LS versions. The Lightning 4s, as mentioned, were exclusively available online and came with a T-shirt. Their bold colorway made them highly sought after by Jordan fanatics, with resale prices easily exceeding four figures and the $2,000 mark.

Although the Air Jordan 4 celebrated its 30th anniversary last year, the silhouette has debuted in several notable colorways throughout 2020. And while its “Fire Red” iteration is on track to join an Off-White collaboration and return to “Black Cat,” Tinker Hatfield’s design is on track for the year, and is gradually building a rumored 2021 roster. The popular “Lightning” colorway from 2006 is reportedly set to release as a retro next August.
Unlike its “Thunder” counterpart, which was reissued in 2012, the “Tour Yellow” Jordan 4 has never been reissued. Recent on-foot endorsements from Travis Scott have sparked renewed interest in the pair, but the sneaker’s bright design with gray accents has garnered attention over the past 14 years. Mesh details and hardware throughout the “Lightning”-like upper provide a stark dark contrast, with the latter component opting for a glossy finish. Profile flaps, tongue labels, Jumpman logos on the heel, and most of the outsole further break up the tone-on-tone suede makeup in shades of gray. “Tour Yellow” branding on the tread, while not easily visible while wearing the shoes, adds a premium touch to a pair worthy of grail status.
Rumors have it that the Jordan 4 “Lightning” will return sometime in August 2021.
