Jordan Brand drew inspiration from the stars for the Jordan 4 Retro Starfish (W). This women’s-exclusive model combines style with functionality by incorporating technical materials commonly found in astronaut suits. The upper of the Jordan 4 Retro Starfish (W) for women is made of black metallic mesh with starfish orange accents that frame the shoe’s paneling.
Matte TPU heel tabs and wings, as well as black mesh on the sidewalls, are reminiscent of classic Jordan 4 features. Raw-edge construction on the tongue exposes foam material, similar to the Jordan 4 Off-White (W). A black, grey, and starfish orange sole completes this astronomical design. The Air Jordan 4 Retro Starfish (Women’s) for women was released in January 2021.
A favorite even among Jordan Brand’s finest, the Air Jordan 4 “Bred” remains one of the cornerstones of the entire lineup, with its colorway having been retro-inspired multiple times to thunderous acclaim. And after its most recent return in 2019, it seems we’ll see the icon once again, albeit with minor changes and new materials.
In terms of colorway, the pair is similar but not entirely exact, largely due to the subtle warm toning of the upper. While the outer surface of the ballistic mesh is partially composed of dark threads, its appearance is heavily influenced by the orange layer underneath, which is more prominent around the edges of each panel, similar to the Union Jordan 1s. Elsewhere, the mesh cages on the vamp and profile are desaturated, as are the laces and branded tabs next to them; Its Jumpman, on the other hand, complements the aforementioned warm tone with a brighter red.
In recent years, Jordan Brand has set a goal of offering as many releases for women as for men. Therefore, the brand has not only expanded its size range but also increased the number of exclusive models, a range that will soon be expanded this Spring 2021 season with the Air Jordan 4 “Starfish.”
After its announcement a month ago, the colorway has just surfaced via official images. While initially assumed to be a fairly faithful adaptation of the popular “Bred” scheme, the pair quickly disproved these assumptions as the titular “Starfish” colorway slowly came into focus. However, the pair still maintains a similar blocking: While the majority of the upper is constructed from a ballistic texture, it is still dark black, with gray support wings, rear logos, and midsoles that further this connection. Elsewhere, however, the warm tone begins to dress where the red normally would, complementing its use along the mostly masked underlayer of the upper.
